TO MARSHY POINT

NATURE CENTER

Marshy Point Nature Center is Baltimore County’s pristine waterfront nature center on the Chesapeake Bay, and is part of the U.S. National Park Service’s Chesapeake Gateways Network. The Nature Center is located at the county’s nearly 500-acre Marshy Point Park, which when combined with neighboring county, state, and federal land, creates a natural preserve encompassing over 3,000 acres. MPNC welcomes hikers, birdwatchers, and nature-lovers of all types from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. every day except Baltimore County government holidays. Throughout the year, the Nature Center hosts an array of environmental, recreational and educational activities for people of all ages.

The Marshy Point Nature Center is one of the newest facilities of the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks.  The Nature Center includes an exhibit hall, auditorium, classrooms, staff workroom, and outdoor decks with picnic tables and benches.  Outdoor facilities include a butterfly garden, trails, and a bridge over the Minnow Branch of Dundee Creek, an overlook, and a canoe dock.  Guided canoe trips are available for exploring the coastal forests, marshes, and shallow waters of Dundee and Saltpeter Creeks.

The volunteer-based Marshy Point Nature Center Council supports a wide variety of nature programs that are led by teacher-naturalists from the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks. From summer camps and weekend canoe trips to natural history lectures and environmental clean-ups, the Center provides visitors with many opportunities to explore the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.

Every fifth grader in the Baltimore County Public School system visits Marshy Point through the Eco-Trekkers environmental education program. The Nature Center also partners with local schools to support the Maryland Green Schools initiative. Chesapeake Camp is a one week-long summer camp for fifth and sixth graders that features hands-on investigation of the Bay and its plants, plankton, fish, and waterfowl, and is repeated for six weeks. Cool Camps are offered on summer evenings for kids of various ages.

Weekend and evening programs enable visitors to enjoy the seasonal changes and abundant wildlife in this unspoiled setting on Chesapeake Bay.  The Marshy Point Nature Center Council presents a series of lectures at 7:00 pm on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (except June, July, and August) featuring photographers, authors, scientists, and watermen who share their knowledge, experience, and insights about the Bay and its heritage.
